Volume 1 contains 25 studies, covering classical art, symbolic languages, saints, devils, comets, dreams, and stars from antiquity to the 19th century. Volume 2 looks into interactions between European and non-European cultures, cartography, and the imagery of black Africans from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
