Hillenbrand has focused on Iran, particularly the Saljuq period, and Umayyad monuments in the Levant. He studies architectural significance, iconography and the context of Muslim buildings. These two collections reflect his diverse interests, including primary material, period analysis, and exploration of monuments and schools of architecture.
