Ioannis Spatharakis's work on Byzantine manuscript painting created the standard corpus for dated illuminated Greek manuscripts. This collection of his essays study the history of portraits in Byzantine manuscripts, the era of Iconoclasm and the Macedonian Renaissance, the Palaeologan period, Cretan wall paintings.
